Military strike less likely

Speaking in a television interview on Monday, Obama has voiced his approval of the Russian proposal to place the chemical weapons in Syria under international control. But this turnaround in developments is not just down to the Russian offer, the liberal daily La Stampa explains: "The proposal can be described as purely demagogic if we consider the amount of time its implementation will require. Yet it received the immediate support of Ban Ki-moon. Less ostentatious and provocative regarding the US is Iran's strategy, but it's also more concrete. Tehran has promised to give Damascus only humanitarian aid, not military aid as Moscow has done, in the event of a military strike. ... Moreover there's news not just from the countries that back Syria, but also from those that want a military strike. Both France and Turkey have wavered in their resolve in the last few days and hours."
