Berlusconi's rehabilitation already underway

With its decision to abolish the property tax, the Italian government has implemented one of Silvio Berlusconi's key election promises, curses Lucia Annunziata in the Huffington Post, and fears that more steps will follow in the political rehabilitation of the ex-prime minister who has been convicted of tax fraud: "Why - for the sake of beloved stability  - do we not just make Silvio Berlusconi president? That is what the cabinet's resolution is really recommending. Because the government may have avoided a crisis but things have gone even more swimmingly for Silvio. The abolition of the tax was the main promise of his programme. His party's identity rests on not paying tax. He could not have reaped a greater success. ... Reading between the lines, the decision is nothing less than the first step in the rehabilitation of Silvio Berlusconi, who is on the rise again, from convicted criminal to political leader."
