Lithuanian envoys should hold their tongues

Telephone calls by Lithuania's ambassadors to Hungary and Azerbaijan that were tapped and published on Youtube have sparked a scandal at home. The diplomats make disparaging comments about their government and the relations with other countries in the region. On Friday the Foreign Ministry in Vilnius decided to recall the ambassadors. The right step, writes political scientist Kęstutis Girnius in the conservative daily Lietuvos žinios: "The ambassadors can't stay in their posts because even if it was neither intentional nor malicious, their imprudence has harmed Lithuania. ... The publishing of these recordings was a provocation. But the real responsibility lies with those who did the bad-mouthing. Instead of getting all up in arms over the provocation and worrying that the dismissals will lead to further provocations, it would be better to make sure that such conversations don't take place in the future."
