Israel supports army for fear of anarchy

According to media reports, Israeli diplomats are encouraging the EU and the US to continue their military aid to Egypt. Israel is driven by the fear of anarchy, the left-liberal daily Süddeutsche Zeitung comments: "What sounds like an afterwit of world history is in fact realpolitik driven by fear. Of course this strange solidarity doesn't come from any great sense of sympathy but from the conclusion that [military chief] al-Sisi and his entourage still represent the best solution to the Egyptian chaos. In the West one may call for non-violence and democracy. However seen from a border watchtower in Southern Israel, the alternative in Egypt is simply: army or anarchy. … Nevertheless the West's dilemma is that at the same time its own credibility depends on the values of democracy not being sacrificed again and again at the already bloody altar of political realism. ... Israel's fear therefore cannot be the only guideline."
