Internships exploit youth unemployment

Interns are set to stage a "sandwich protest" at lunchtime today, Wednesday, outside the EU parliament in Brussels, to draw attention to their poor working conditions. Many internships are a modern form of exploitation, the liberal daily La Stampa concurs: "Open the ring to the fury of the interns. They are protesting against the EU circus in which institutions, embassies, working groups, lobbies and NGOs bustle about, and - as befits these times of desperate searching for work - occupy the young with temporary work that is below their level of competencies. The youth have no idea if they will ever enter the world of work. But they have understood that a temporary position, with or without payment, is not the jackpot. Only rarely, and only after a considerable period of time does an internship turn into a permanent position. More often than not it borders on exploitation. A modern and civilised form of it, which is nevertheless exploitation."
