EU must take Pope's criticism seriously

On his first official trip Pope Francis visited the Italian island of Lampedusa. In view of the refugee tragedies that play out there he called for more solidarity instead of a "globalisation of indifference". The EU should take this message to heart, the state-owned liberal daily Wiener Zeitung urges: "The fact is that the interior ministers of continental European haven't made any concessions to their EU colleagues from the periphery (such as Cyprus, Malta, or Greece). The latter have been left to deal on their own with the boat refugees - who are often subject to conditions that have nothing to do with human dignity and human rights. … The [Christian] parties, but also other parties represented in government and parliaments, should ask themselves whether their definition of solidarity still holds. The net contributor countries of Europe show their solidarity by saving banks in Southern Europe. Fine. But at least a fraction of the sum this costs could go towards financing decent transit camps for refugees in these countries. And no one can be - or rather should be - indifferent on this matter."
