Iranians vote for political change

The election victory of the moderate cleric Hassan Rouhani offers the West the chance to improve relations with Iran, the conservative daily The Times writes: "By electing Mr Rouhani so emphatically, the Iranian people have sent a powerful message both to the regime and the outside world. It demonstrated to the hardliners that there is huge public support for social and political reform and a desire to end Iran's international isolation. And to the outside world, it was a reminder that the regime has little support among a large proportion of Iran's young and relatively pro-Western population.... The thrust of Western policy must be to drive a bigger wedge between a deeply discredited regime and the people it oppresses."
