Self-immolation rouses Bulgaria

Plamen Goranov, a 36-year-old man who set himself on fire on February 20 in protest at the mayor of the Black Sea city of Varna, died on Sunday. His death has roused all Bulgaria, the opinion portal Svobodata writes: "Before he set himself on fire, Plamen Goranov bore a banner with the words: 'Resignation of Kyrill and his entire council by 5 pm on February 20, 2013'. Today, on March 5, Kyrill Yordanov is still mayor of Varna, and as such a symbol for the soullessness of Bulgaria's political class. ... As long as the authorities looking into Goranov's death fail to establish his guilt in the matter, he won't resign, he said. ... But take a look at this man. He is the ugly face of the political transformation in Bulgaria, the spiritlessness and inner brutalisation that determines our lives. That's exactly what Plamen wanted to show us with his deed. He wanted to startle us, and wake us up. And he has done."
