Macedonia not ready for EU

A concrete date will not be set for the start of EU accession negotiations with Macedonia, the EU foreign ministers decided on Tuesday. In addition to Greece, Bulgaria also blocked this step for the first time, on the grounds that Macedonia claims the right to historic symbols. Bulgaria's stance is entirely justified, the daily Sega writes: "Macedonia is treading water. Skopje is obsessed with the idea of its statehood. In another century that would have been accepted as legitimate policy, because the theft of material and intellectual goods by neighbouring countries was common practice. Today, however, such things are obviated both by resistance from the countries concerned and the philosophy of the European Union. Europe has set itself the target of putting such historical disputes behind it, not reinventing them."
