Sme is Slovakia's leading quality liberal newspaper and is seen as the opposition's mouthpiece against Robert Fico's left-wing government. In 2014, after its German co-owner Rheinische Post sold its share to the Slovakian investment group Penta which had been implicated in a large corruption scandal, its senior editors and half of the editing staff left the paper. These journalists are now publishing the independent newspaper Dennik N, which was launched on 1 January, 2015.
