Népszabadság

Népszabadság is an opposition daily. Founded in 1956, it is the successor to the Szabad Népthis newspaper and Hungary's most widely read quality newspaper. During the socialist era it was seen as the mouthpiece of the sole ruling party, the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party (MSZMP). After the collapse of communism in 1989 it maintained close ties to its successor party, the Hungarian Workers Party (MSZP). The MSZP also partially owns the paper.
