Libération was founded under the aegis of philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre in 1973 and is considered France's leading leftwing daily. In 2005 the French banker Edouard de Rothschild became the principle shareholder with 38.87 percent. Libération is known for its eye-catching front pages. The drop in circulation has plunged the newspaper into financial difficulties.
