Hürriyet is Turkey's third best-selling newspaper and is considered a leading medium. Its political stance is secular to nationalist and it describes itself as liberal conservative. It has belonged to the Doğan Media Group since 1994. In 2009 the company was ordered to pay a fine amounting to more than a billion euros. It saw this as an act of revenge by the Erdoğan government for its strongly critical stance towards the government.
