What are Putin's plans for Syria?

Russia and the US have been at odds for some time over whether to enlist Syrian ruler Assad in the fight against the terrorist IS. Putin has now taken the initiative with Russian airstrikes on Syrian territory. Will he force the West to change its strategy?
