Kosovo's future after Rugova's death

"The world always approved of his policies, but it didn't help him," writes Matyas Zrno following the death of Ibrahim Rugova. "He knew Western Europe, studied in Paris, and embraced other cultures. Although he was born into a Muslim family, he felt a close affiliation with Christianity. A picture of Maria Theresa of Austria hung in his office. His death brings great sorrow to Albanians, and Western diplomats are shocked, but it doesn't have to be a catastrophe for the political scene in Kosovo," Zrno writes, pointing to Rugova's monarchist tendencies. "Without a monarch, Kosovo may have better chances of establishing standard democratic mechanisms."
