Salomé Zourabichvili on Georgia and Europe

Salomé Zourabichvili, the former Georgian foreign minister, asks Europe to support the political process launched in November 2003 in his country with the Rose Revolution. "It is Europe's responsibility to convince Russia that it is mistakenly placing its hopes in a return to the past. Europe bears this responsibility not only in order to ensure its future energy independence, but also to demonstrate certain binding European values - liberty, democracy, mutual respect. To this end, Europe must equip itself with the appropriate instruments: a large, semi-public foundation for Europe and democracy, a university to train the future foot soldiers of would-be democracies, a police force, an army of judges and magistrates that sustain the models we want to develop. What Europe especially needs is conviction. If Europe does not convince itself that it has an interest in the fate of its neighbours, just who will believe in it tomorrow?"
