The problematic distribution of EU funding

In an interview with Szilard Szőnyi, Hungarian MEP Jozsef Szajer, a member of Fidesz, the country's main opposition party, says EU funding is being distributed in "a way that is reminiscent of the times under communist dictatorship." "An institution outside the parliament's sphere of authority has been given the task of distributing EU funding. This is at variance with European practice, according to which several parties control the allocation of EU funding. Here in Hungary, the head of government alone has the final say on how this enormous sum is distributed – something which is almost unconstitutional. ... This money constitutes a large portion of Hungary's state budget and should be under parliamentary control. As far as I can gather, even Brussels has taken a critical view of the situation. It wouldn't surprise me if EU politicians were to approve sanctions in the near future."
