In Denmark too, there is currently a debate about how to deal with prostitution. Karen Syberg writes that her first reaction would be to ban it altogether because, after all, it's nothing other than trading in people. "But then reality, with all its contradictions, kicks in. In Sweden, the sex trade has been banned since 1999. The Swedes' experience with the ban has been scrutinised, but expectations that this scrutiny would lead to unequivocal conclusions have only been partially fulfilled. The number of new, young prostitutes has gone down, but according to the Ministry of Justice's statistics, the prostitution milieu has become a lot tougher. So what should be done?"
