Andreas Dresen's new Film

Rüdiger Suchsland praises "Sommer vorm Balkon" (Summer in Berlin), the new film by Berlin-based director Andreas Dresen. "Like other films released over the past few months, 'Summer in Berlin' belongs to a particular genre of Berlin films which are bringing new colour into German cinemas. They could be described as 'Hartz IV films'. Young directors tell fast-paced, melancholic, yet at the same time funny stories which thrive on the crises and social decline of their protagonists. They combine high spirits with an insightful look into social circumstances, and are set in Berlin's eastern districts. Dresen tells movingly of people's struggle to get on in life, and sometimes of their failure. Yet his films have a strangely optimistic note. Dresen quotes Beckett. 'Try again. Fail again. Fail better.'"
