The EU needs a seat on the UN Security Council

Finnish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb reflects on the role of Finland and Europe in global politics: "Environmental protection, food, international terrorism and cross-border crime are challenges facing the entire world. .. Europe has established itself as a new power alongside the United States. ... The United Nations is a unique global organisation, but it needs new forms of cooperation to be able to act. ... Finland has its own focus in promoting democracy. Our starting point is securing human rights. ... National self-determination cannot be used to conceal human rights violations. ... A quick look at the UN Security Council agenda suffices to show how important the UN is for the EU. Kosovo, Cyprus, Georgia, the Middle East and Iran are cases where the UN dealt with crises that had a direct connection to the EU. ... In the long term, I would like to see the EU become a permanent member of the UN Security Council. ... The people have a right to demand better institutions for coping with common problems."
