Botho Strauß on the conflict with Islam

Mockery and satire won't get us anywhere, comments playwright Botho Strauß in a text about the conflict between Western society and Islam. He sees the conflict as a "source for inspiration and an opportunity to exert indirect influence arising from the immediate proximity to an alien and antagonistic sacred power... The conflict cannot be resolved, but now it's clearly defined and the period of 'new confusion' has come to an end. The West's confrontation with this insuperable antagonism, the sacred and the secular, has plunged the prevailing attitude of 'anything goes', of syncretism and indifference, into a crisis. Perhaps one could go as far as to say: that's all over and done with now."
