Poland and its Fourth Republic

The leadership of the Kaczynski brothers in Poland is causing Europe to rack its brains. Arunas Spraunius notes that their "Fourth Republic," which is allegedly based on conservative values, is taking an increasingly anti-European stance. "Poland offers Europe a model of right-wing conservatism that is intended to counterbalance French liberalism. In the post-communist states of Central and Eastern Europe there is indeed a growing tendency towards traditional values, and perhaps this is the only way to preserve order and respect in these countries. The complaints voiced by 'old Europe' are being deliberately ignored."
