The negotiations of the EU budget

"The problem with the negotiations on the future financing of Europe is that the British presidency is the judge in its own case," writes Fernando de Sousa. "A community president must, by definition, be neutral. But where Tony Blair is concerned, neutrality falls by the wayside. He defends only his own interests and his 'rebate'. (...) And the British newspapers don't hesitate to describe their prime minister as a 'traitor' the moment there emerges any hint of a possible concession. As a result, Blair does not hesitate to use his position as EU president to simply defend his country's exclusive interests."
