High hopes for Nordic energy

"Can problems of global energy and the environment be solved, or have we reached the point of no return?" asks environmental journalist Ebbe Soenderris. He draws hope from a new study commissioned by Greenpeace confirming the potential of a transnational project for energy cooperation between the Nordic countries: "The conclusions are very promising: the Nordic countries could become independent of nuclear power and coal and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a third by 2030. This would mean large initial investments, but in the long term these would pay off in energy savings. The most important instrument for achieving this is saving energy wherever it can be saved and avoiding energy waste... But this doesn't mean we Northern Europeans will have to go without heat, mobility and the comforts of modern life."
