Axe falls on french editors

Independent columnist Andreas Whittas Smith casts an eye over a turbulent week for the French press that saw two editors of major publications given the boot. Alain Genestar, editor of the successful weekly 'Paris Match' was shown the door after publishing pictures of the wife of the French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy with her lover in New York. Serge July, editor and founder of left-wing daily 'Liberation' was axed due to ever increasing losses, both in terms of capital and circulation. "He was fired for refusing to make further cuts in staffing demanded by a new leading shareholder, Edouard de Rothschild... The famous rule that 'all political careers end in failure' applies equally to football managers and to editors of national publications,” observes the columnist.
