Doping in the name of socialism

According to a 1976 report presented to Antonin Himl, then head of the Czech government's sports union, "the rational use of anabolic steroids serves to promote sport within the socialist state and boosts the prestige of the Republic." For Marian Simo, this document, which only recently came to light, is proof that the Czech government employed doping systematically in sport. The Communist Central Committee in Czechoslovakia even went as far as to adopt a national doping plan: "The 1970s were the golden years of doping. Sport was one of the battlefields for the conflict between East and West. There was doping on both sides, with the tacit agreement of the respective governments."
