Ukraine and NATO

The parties of the Orange camp led by Yulia Tymoshenko and Viktor Yushchenko, which until recently were bitterly divided, have agreed on a new government for Ukraine. Both want the country to move closer to the EU and NATO. However, talking to Jacek Pawlicki, Jeremy Shapiro of the Brookings Institute in Washington expresses doubts about Ukraine joining NATO. "One has to imagine a scenario in which a NATO member state is attacked. What would this entail for the alliance? What would we have to do to protect that state? We shouldn't take on obligations we are not in a position to meet. That would be suicide for NATO." In response to the question of whether the US would be prepared to defend Ukraine against an attack, Mr. Shapiro replies: "No, but perhaps in the future."
