Reviving the European project

Fidel Sendagorta, an adviser in the Spanish foreign affairs ministry, believes the debate surrounding the constitution has underscored the importance of initiating a real dialogue between citizens and European leaders. "In certain European circles, we continue to hear people criticise the organisation of referendums [on the constitution]. The arrival on the scene of people who have done nothing but quibble, would be incompatible, in the long term, with a viable European project. What we are seeing here is an arrogant and blind reaction. If we continue to act with a kind of enlightened despotism, pretending that nothing happened, we will end up having to deal with nationalist and populist responses that will result in a real regression in European political life."
