Oscar Seco's warrior Christ

The International Contemporary Art Fair (ARCO) of Madrid has not escaped the raging debate about free expression sparked by the controversy over the Muhammad cartoons. Among the works presented: a notable one by Spanish artist Oscar Seco showing Christ preaching while holding a missile. "My work, which I left untitled and which I completed five months ago, encourages one to ponder the fact that any religion is destructive when taken to an extreme and that freedom of expression is sacred," Seco explains in an interview led by Antonio Lucas. I depict Christ with a missile; Monty Python made "Life of Brian', a delirious vision of Christianity; Kubrick enlisted God as a symbol in '2001: A Space Odyssey' and he [God] does not come out looking too good. ... Freedom implies accepting criticism and irony."
