Jordi Savall regrets the lack of cultural dialogue

The Catalan musician Jordi Savall, violist and conductor, ponders in an interview with Julian Sykes the way Westerners consider other civilisations. "Our vision of culture and religion has prevented us from appreciating others in their difference. Today we are paying the price of these 500 years of silence and lack of dialogue. ... We still have the same inability to view others as equals. We always think that our Western civilisation is the real culture, that the others are little primitive cultures with barbaric customs. If we rejected Arabs it was because we had a total incomprehension of their way of life and their religion. If we expulsed Jews, it was because they were too different and had killed our Jesus."
