The shock of civilisations according to Marjane Satrapi

Marjane Satrapi's comic book series 'Persepolis', which recounts a tumultuous Iranian childhood, has been adapted into a film to be released in French theatres June 27th. In an interview conducted by Denis Fernand, Satrapi refutes the shock of civilizations theory. "The real division in the world is not between Orient and Occident, between North and South, but between the idiots and the non-idiots, between democratic and non-democratic societies. For me, a democratic society is one where men and women are equal. In Iran, a woman is worth half that of a man. ... In the long term, things are going to change. Others think that it is better to bring democracy by bombing people and installing Coke machines. We must stop believing in this mythic Western civilisation. You are civilised because you're not hungry. Close the stores and cut the electricity in Paris, and civilisation won't last very long."
