What will the Latvian Euro be called?

Latvia hopes to introduce the euro by 2008, but a bitter dispute has long been raging over the official name to be given to the currency. The word "euro" doesn't fit in with the Latvian inflectional system because it ends in "o", and "Europe" is "Eiropa" in Latvian. The diphthong "eu" doesn't exist in Latvian, Janis Priede notes. He points out that "eu" was used to transcribe foreign words in Soviet days. "It's truly amazing how many people are ignorant of even the most basic rules of our linguistic system today, thus contributing to the policy of 'russification' in our country."
