Fundamental rights trampled by Swiss immigration policy

In Switzerland, new ordinances were examined on Wednesday, October 24th, targeting immigrants from countries beyond the EU. Virginie Poyetton is concerned to see Switzerland thus toughen its policies. "As of 2008, for example, 'Extra-European' parents wishing to bring their children aged over 12 will have a year to go through procedures and prove their financial independence. After this deadline, they will automatically lose their rights. Against children's rights, this measure is not applied to Europeans in Switzerland. In the same line of thinking, family entry and settlement will be allowed on the condition that spouses live together. A woman who is battered by her husband would not be able to stay in sheltered housing without losing her residency papers. ... Will the European Court of Human Rights be able to provide help for the victims of this policy? We'll find out in Strasbourg."
