The Italian media landscape as a special case

Media expert Colin Porlezza explains why Silvio Berlusconi is not just "an accident" but rather an integral part of Italy's media landscape. According to Porlezza, this is due to the fact that an independent journalitic culture never developed there: "Firstly, Italy has a so-called 'editoria impura' in which journalistic principles are secondary to the interests of the owners of media enterprises. Most media companies in Italy belong to concerns which are not otherwise involved in the media sector. Secondly, reporting is strongly politicised - not least because of the long tradtion of party-affiliated newspapers, most of which, however, have now disappeared. Thirdly, as a result of this, the predominant form of reporting there is so-called 'opinion journalism'."
