A litterary autumn suffocated by the number of new releases

"No less than 727 new novels will appear in bookstores before November. The traditional French litterary autumn is more excessive every year", writes Anne Pitteloud who calls it a "censorship via abundance". "It's that the book market is controlled by a few groups for whom books are nothing more than one activity among others: their primary objective is no longer to publish works that matter or to expose talent, but to takeover parts of the market from the competition. The big publishers thus publish more books, but in smaller numbers: in the mix, certain books will surely find success, or win one of the literary prizes of the fall... In this commercial logic, the book is a product whose lifetime in the bookstore hardly lasts more than a few weeks. They have to give up their place to the new arrivals."

Swiss independant bookshops in danger

On Thursday, October 26th, around fifty bookshops launched a 'blank window display' operation to draw public attention to the fact that they may face extinction for lack of book price regulation. "Disarmed by the cut prices of big chain stores, 51 bookshops have been shut down in French-speaking Switzerland since 2001 and around twenty in German-speaking Switzerland", explains Anne Pitteloud. "The closing down of independent bookshops is threatening cultural diversity. With the erosion of sales points, French-speaking Swiss publishers will have lost a third of their sales figures. In these conditions it is becoming increasingly dangerous to take literary risks, consumerist logic advising that only best-sellers should be published... Ultimately that means the death of literature. ... Contrary to other commercial sectors, publishing responds not to demand, but to what is on offer."
