Polish governmental coalition collapses

In a surprise move, Polish Prime Minister and PiS leader Jarosław Kaczynski has sacked his deputy prime minister and Minister for Agriculture, Andrzej Lepper, owing to corruption charges. This has prompted Lepper's populist Samoobrona Farmers' Party to pull out of its coalition with the conservative PiS. Given the resulting unclear distribution of power in the parliament, Jan Piński favours early elections. "The Prime Minister knows that early elections pose the risk that - even if he wins them - he will no longer have a coalition partner. A scenario in which only three parties - the right-wing liberal Civic Platform (PO), the conservative ruling party PiS and the social democratic SLD - make it into the next parliament is entirely feasible. It's highly likely that this would leave the PiS in the opposition. Such a constellation would certainly have its advantages for Jarosław Kaczynski. It would make it easier for his brother [President Lech Kaczynski] to run for re-election."
