Slovenia slashes culture budget

Slovenia's centre-left government presented its proposed 2012 budget on Wednesday, which foresees a 38 million euro cut in the culture budget. That's four times more than for other portfolios, the left liberal daily Delo points out, complaining that there is a lack of appreciation of the social function of culture: "Normally the member of the National Culture Council tend to adopt a reserved stance. But this hits them so hard that this time they were not very restrained in their accusations against the government. The budget means drastic cuts. Now the Culture Capital Maribor project faces major problems. And film productions and investments in the Ljubljana opera, the Maribor art gallery and so on have all been postponed. ... A visibly impoverished cultural landscape raises the question of whether our government has forgotten the fundamental role of culture in the development of each individual, the nation as a whole and the state and of how it plans to replace the relevance of culture for our history."
