International Women's Day

Spanish prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and his Swedish counterpart, Göran Persson, propose "a European pact on male-female parity". In their opinion, "such a pact would become part of the Lisbon strategy and allow us to respond more quickly to the objectives defined within it, such as male-female parity in the workplace, the fight against salary discrimination and the promotion of female entrepreneurship. We want male-female parity to be among the criteria used in evaluating the progress of each member state with respect to the Lisbon objectives. ... Only in this way will we eradicate the inequalities that remain to this day between the sexes. Only in this way will we be able to build a Europe with a competitive economy and a flexible, modern and fair society."
