A plea for a "science without deduction"

Fifteen scientists declare themselves in favour of a "science without deduction", pointing out that "this must be as open a science (open, among other things, to the question of meaning) as possible, and should not shut itself up in a narrow-minded rationalism typical of scientism. ... While, in principle, religious or metaphysical conceptions should under no circumstance impede the progress of scientific research, it is not only legitimate, but also necessary in hindsight to consider the philosophical, ethical and metaphysical implications of scientific discoveries and theories. ... Not to do this would be to run the risk of cutting off scientists and science from a majority of our contemporaries."
