Nationalism and racism

Fernando Paulouro, the daily's managing editor, offers his thoughts on Saturday's [May 20] rally by several dozen militant members of the National Renewal Party (extreme-right) in the town of Vila de Rei. They were protesting against the municipality's decision to invite Brasilian families to the area to counter the depopulation of one of the country's poorest regions. "Just like the Portuguese labourers who contributed to Europe's growth and development in the 1950's and 1960's, today's immigrants to Portugal are making an essential contribution to the country's future. ... The pathetic nationalist gathering in Vila de Rei and its xenophobic character generated nothing more than indifference, despite the protesters' determination to link the issue to some of Portugal's other problems, such as unemployment."
