The Italian law of silence

British author and committed Hellas-Verona fan Tim Parks writes about the corrupt referee scandal and the Italian conspiracy of silence. "The remarkable thing about it is that not a single referee has spoken up about the affair. These men, who are so fond of flaunting their resolute authority, were not willing to speak out about the pressure to which they have been subjected – for years now. Everybody knew, even Pierluigi Collina. Collina must have been aware of the fact that, thanks to his reputation, he enjoyed a freedom which was denied his colleagues... The sad thing about it, of course, is that this lack of courage is not confined to football, but extends to all spheres of public life in Italy. Again and again, you have situations in which everybody suspects or perhaps even knows that the official version is just empty rhetoric and that the rules are being broken. Yet nobody says a word."
