Obituary to cellist Mstislav Rostropovich

Martin Nyström pays tribute to Russian cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich, who passed away on April 27: "To see and listen to him was one of the most intensely communicative experiences I have ever had. His cello playing was incredibly complex, focussed and poetic - it was almost a confession. Rostropovich was perhaps the greatest cellist since Pablo Casals. Among the music we most commonly associate with him are Beethoven's cello sonatas, the concerts of Shostakovich and the works of Britten and Bach. As a conductor, Rostropovich contributed to making the Shostakovich opera 'Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk,' which was banned in the Soviet Union, famous the world over. But most of all people remember Rostropovich for his love of democracy and his active resistance against the Soviet Union."
