The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi

"Is one allowed to express one's amazement that the world is so taken aback that Sochi won the 2014 Winter Games?" Thomas Neuhold asks. "One is. Decisions that carry such far-reaching economic implications are also made on the basis of economic considerations. Sochi is one of the greatest development projects in the history of Russia. And incidentally, quite a few Austrian companies will also no doubt profit substantially from the project. The hope of opening up new markets was a key factor behind the decision in favour of Sochi, and at present these markets happen to be in Eastern Europe."

Sochi beats Salzburg in bid for Winter Olympics

The IOC has chosen the Russian city of Sochi on the Black Sea, to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. Thomas Neuhold responds to Austria's cries of lament about the decision by pointing to a series of "homemade mistakes": "It really was a little too naïve to believe that in today's globalised sports business one could triumph on the strength of Olympic spirit alone. The concept of authentic and transparent games was born of financial necessity, and perhaps with good intentions... The lack of enthusiasm shown by the residents of Salzburg for the city's candidacy did not go unnoticed by the International Olympic Committee. 'The mayor was the only politician to demonstrate genuine commitment to the idea', the 'Salzburger Nachrichten' wrote. And it's true."
