String instruments in demand for pop music

Hanspeter Künzler reckons he can make out a new trend embracing the entire the pop world – from Muse to Coldplay to the Libertines: "Real string instruments  have the power to spread a kind of warmth that digital technology has difficulties reproducing. But the mellow, elegant and full-bodied sound of string instruments is obviously much in demand nowadays. Violins, violas and cellos convey a sense of cosy security in the backwards-looking pop scene. They develop their suggestive power – which has the effect of a harmonious yet alien sound and is the product of their classical tradition – in the most diverse musical genres, from hip-hop to techno and from jazz to rock and roll."
