Two years of EU enlargement

"Three-quarters of the country's citizens are proud to be members of the EU, but they also value the preservation of their national identity," writes Iveta Kramesova, evaluating the results of a Eurobarometer study. According to the study, 55 percent of Czechs see EU membership as advantageous for their country. Kramesova says that business has profited most from the move. "It gained access to a considerably larger market. Exports are at a record high, the country is attracting new investors and the economy is growing quickly... A great disappointment for the Czechs, however, has been that some of the older member states are continuing to keep their labour markets closed. The Czech Republic will have to wait a few more years for genuine full membership."
