Cronyism ruins Slovenia's state-owned companies

In Slovenia the appointment of Gašpar Gašpar Mišič as chairman of the state-owned port operator Luka Koper threatens to destabilise the ruling centre-left coalition. Mišič is a member of the centre-left ruling party PS and until recently was a state secretary at Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek's office. The entwining of politics and the business world has led to the ruin of numerous flagship state-run companies in recent years, the online edition of Žurnal24 notes: "And not because of the crisis but because of poor, inefficient and dishonest managements and incompetent supervisory boards. They in turn are appointed by governments that for years have played an active role in the appointment of supervisory and executive board members of state-owned companies. ... Bad business decisions, as well as supervisory boards that aren't up to the task or have such close ties to the management that they can't do their job properly, have driven us to the brink of disaster."
