Europe's participation in the UN mission in Lebanon

Jens König criticises the way both opponents and advocates of German involvement in the UN peacekeeping force are discussing the issue. "References to Germany's history are out of place in this discussion, and that goes for both sides. The country's Nazi past neither makes it our duty to intervene in Lebanon nor is it a reason to stay out of the conflict." König is particularly critical of the Left Party's position: "Gregor Gysi and Oskar Lafontaine, the two most resolute opponents of deploying German troops in the Middle East, are using Germany's past to monopolise the discussion and justify their arguments. This makes their attitude seem rather dishonest and convenient. Isn't it precisely because of its history that Germany is regarded as a trustworthy political mediator in the region?... There's no need to feign normality in our foreign policy – that normality is a reality. Sending German soldiers to the Middle East would be an expression of this."
