Ex-communists the staunchest supporters of the free market

"The world doesn't always conform to the rules of logic – particularly not in Eastern Europe," Miriam Koch comments. She notes that "in many post-communist countries the former communist parties are becoming the most passionate advocates of the free market economy and the EU. The conservative parties, meanwhile, are increasingly trying to win the support of the losers of globalisation and want to seal their countries off from this process, particularly when they're not in government." Koch cites the ex-communist President of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov, the Montenegran Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and Berlin as examples of this trend. "The capital, co-governed by ex-communists, is the first place in Germany to have removed most of the restrictions on shop opening hours which have existed for 50 years."
