Europe mired in corruption

The Czech Prime Minister Petr Nečas will step down today, Monday, over a spying and corruption affair. Klara Klinger of the conservative daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna sees a Europe-wide trend in the scandal: "All of Europe is succumbing to the corruption virus. When I read the foreign press, I get the feeling corruption has become a genuine epidemic menacing the entire continent. We are seeing one corruption scandal after another. The one that's making the most noise at the moment is in the Czech Republic. The affair will certainly have repercussions for several months, if not years. And things look the same way in France, where ex-budget minister Jérôme Cahuzac stashed away hundreds of thousands of euros in Swiss accounts. And now the straw that's broken the camel's back is Lionel Messi. The hero of millions of football fans has turned out to be a common fraudster. He's been caught red-handed engaging in tax fraud."
