The Role of the State

The Slovenian government is trying to tackle the country's lack of competitiveness on the global market with economic reform. Economist Aleksander Kešeljević says he has no doubt that economic reforms are necessary, but he disproves of what he calls an overemphasis on the market. "The trend of the State playing a greater role is attributed to anti-liberal economists. Yet the experiences of countries in transition have shown how important institutional monitoring of the markets is. Reforms aimed at liberalising the economy require more, and not less, state intervention. Paradoxically, more market also means more (constitutional) state. This invalidates the neo-liberal view according to which the market and the State are two opposing forces."
